State counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi holds talks with Singaporean PM

STATE Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi held talks with visiting Singaporean Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong at the Credentials Hall of the President’s House in Nay Pyi Taw on 8 June 2016. During the meeting the two representatives discussed matters related to updating the avoidance of double taxation agreement inked in 1999, promoting investment, cooperation in the development of the tourism sector including direct flights to be operated from Singapore to major cities in Myanmar and increasing the availability of training courses at the Myanmar-Singapore Vocational Training Institute. The two also held discussions on taking an active leadership role in the international arena and cooperation by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on behalf of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). After the ceremony both representatives witnessed the exchange of notes between the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin and Singaporean Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Robert Chua on the granting of a visa exemption to each other’s citizens holding ordinary passports for stay of 30 days.

PRESIDENT U Htin Kyaw and wife Daw Su Su Lwin warmly welcomed Singaporean Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong and his wife on the lawn of the Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw on 8 June 2016.

After the welcoming ceremony, the President and Singaporean Prime Minister held talks at the Credentials Hall. During the meeting, the two representatives held discussions on updating the avoidance of double taxation agreement signed between the two countries in 1999, investment enhancement, bilateral cooperation in the tourism sector including more flights between Singapore and Myanmar’s major cities and the opening of more training courses at the Myanmar-Singapore Vocational Training Institute.

In the evening, President U Htin Kyaw and wife Daw Su Su Lwin hosted a dinner in honour of the Singaporean Prime Minister and wife at the Presidential Palace. Also present were State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the two Vice presidents.

The Singaporean Prime Minister Mr. Lee HsienLoong is the first Head of State to visit Myanmar under the new government. His visit to Myanmar coincides with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Myanmar and Singapore.
